In light of the international health pandemic surrounding the coronavirus, the CDC and health professionals are urging people to heed to and take seriously the social distancing guidelines and stay home to help flatten the curve and prevent the spread of the virus.  Sure, the thought of being held up at home for an unknown period of time is unnerving. But once you’ve scrolled social media, did some of the family video challenges on social media and a deep dive through a plethora of your quarantined snacks, what’s next?

Whether you want to laugh, cry, be spooked or get some information. Netflix says it has what you want; they’ve got what you need. The streaming platform has a variety of movies and shows to fit every appetite - just pick your genre; keep reading to find out what people are watching, and to help you select one of many popular movies/shows to satisfy your viewing pleasure.

We’ve put together a list of our reviews on shows and films you can watch while you’re holed up inside.

The Haunting of Hill House: If you dig horror movies, then I recommend The Haunting of Hill House.  There are about ten 1-hour episodes. “Okay, it’s not really a horror movie it’s more of a suspense with some “gotcha” moments that may make you jump.  The family drama is basically about 5 siblings who grew up in a haunted house, and how the experience of it now is now impacting their adult lives. The scenes go back and forth between their lives as adults and them as children; if you blink, you can miss something. I know how scrolling through your phone can consume you so make sure you’re paying attention. The action really happens after Episode 3.

Containment: Now, this one may jolt you a bit given the current state of what we’re going through with Covid-19 but it’s definitely an attention grabber. An unknown and deadly epidemic breaks out in Atlanta, a mandatory quarantine is quickly enforced, forcing people on the inside to fight for their lives while local and federal officials race to find a cure.

The Walking Dead: This one is an oldie but a goodie. You can get caught up on the first days of this show on Netflix and watch the new season on Sunday nights on AMC. The Sheriff of the town Rick Grimes wakes up from a coma and he finds himself in a Zombie Apocalypse. He sets out to find his family and he gets connected to a group and ends up becoming the leader. This show’s theme is survival of the fittest and focuses on the risks and the things the people had to do in order to survive.

When They See Us: This real-life story of the Exonerated Five is one you will need a couple of boxes of tissues for. This series tells the story of a woman that was savagely attacked in Central Park in New York, five teenage boys from Harlem were falsely accused, imprisoned and tortured by the justice system. You’ll experience a range of raw emotions watching this film.

The Wire: This series looks at the narcotics scene in Baltimore through the eyes of law enforcers as well as the drug dealers and users. Other facets of the city that are explored in the series are the government and bureaucracy, schools and the news media. The show was created by former police reporter David Simon, who also wrote many of the episodes

House of CardsFrank Underwood is a Democrat appointed as the Secretary of State. Along with his wife, he sets out on a quest to seek revenge from the people who betrayed him while successfully rising to supremacy.

The Pharmacist: A look at the opioid epidemic happening before there was an opioid epidemic. This documentary, recently released on Netflix, looks in on small-town pharmacist Dan Schneider who lost his son in a drug-related shooting. He just wants to bring his son’s killer to justice but discovers something else is going on when healthy people visit his pharmacy with high dose prescriptions for OxyContin. Schneider vows to save the lives of the young people in his community and take on Big Pharma. There are four episodes of about one hour each.

You: Can you imagine someone crushing on you and showing up to show you just how much? And willing to take out anyone that gets in the way of that! Welp, the “You” series will leave you wondering what will happen next or who will pay the price when a crush between a bookstore manager and writer quickly veers off the road into the bushes.
